Low Vision
Researcher at the Schepens Eye Research Institute have developed new spectacle lenses embedded with telescopes that help visually impaired people see road signs and other objects essential for safe driving while also viewing the larger scene in front of the vehicle.  The glasses are easier to use that existing telescope models because of a wider magnified view and easier access to that view.  Dr. Eli Peli and co-inventor Dr. Vargas-Martin designed a wide field telescope made of straight and curved mirrors built completely within the spectacle lens.

Ocular Surgery
Premium Intra Ocular Lenses (IOL's) to correct presbyopia during cataract surgery are becoming more popular.  There are three currently being used ReZoom, ReStor and the Crystalens.  Each has it's advantages and disadvantages and the ultimate decision as to which lens is used should be left to the surgeon.  In some cases, different lenses may be used in each eye to produce the desired functional result.   These lenses are not covered by medical insurance although the cataract extraction procedure is, so there are out of pocket expenses associated with these premium IOL's.  If you are facing cataract surgery, discuss these options with your doctor at your next visit.
